2012 in review

I haven’t posted much on my blog for the last few months but thanks to all who have visited my blog this year! Happy New Year to all of you! Yay!

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

600 people reached the top of Mt. Everest in 2012. This blog got about 9,300 views in 2012. If every person who reached the top of Mt. Everest viewed this blog, it would have taken 16 years to get that many views.

It’s the last night of the Perseids and I have yet to see a single streak of burning rock or ice or whatever falling from the edge of space!

Today marks the last night the Earth passes through the debris of the comet Swift-Tutle and I haven’t seen a single shooting star to wish upon – not that I believe in wishes anyway. The problem is that I live in a city that literally glows with lights all over! Star-gazing is a hobby you can never enjoy in Riyadh! I have seen comets and the Milky Way back home in the Philippines when I was a kid but I have yet to see a meteor shower. I was hoping this year’s Perseids would be it but I was wrong. I guess I have no choice but to wait for next year or the one after that. I might just schedule my next vacation to have a chance at seeing and photographing a meteor shower. Damn I wish I lived in a place where I can watch the stars without the obstruction of city lights!

BinarySauce gets a new look…

If this isn’t the first time you’ve visited my blog then you might have noticed the new look. I wanted to make my own custom theme but, since I’m only using a free WordPress account, I had no choice but to go for pre-made ones. My former theme was Clean Home and I liked the minimal look. The only problem is that it uses large headers and therefore looked very cluttered especially when there are images in my posts. The current theme is called Ari and follows minimalism as much as Clean Home. I do think it looks a lot better and it also has some features not available to the former theme.

Other than Tech: My love for aquariums!

Blue female betta under the surface

One of my female bettas taking a sip of air under the surface of the water.

I have mentioned it a few times in my former posts but I’ll say it again: I have been setting up a new 155 gallon (that’s almost 600 liters)  tank in my room. It has kept me busy and has made me more tired than I ever was in the past few months – not that I’m complaining. Haha! I don’t mind the maintenance routines of a huge aquarium anyway. It’s good exercise.

The Bing homepage has been Metrofied

Bing's new homepage

I use Bing as my default search engine but I rarely (well, almost never) go to the homepage as I have set Chrome to use Bing when I type search queries in the address bar. I ended up going into the homepage by accident though and this is what I found: Bing. Metrofied!

I like it. I actually think it’s beautiful. I don’t know when it has changed but I don’t really care about that now. With rumors of Hotmail going Metro, I can see each and every web service and product they have getting the Metro touch and I really look forward to that. It would make using Microsoft services a lot easier on tablets especially with Windows 8 on the horizon.

My new 155 gallon aquarium! (video)

I’ve been busy setting up my new fish tank. It’s a whopping 155 gallons – the largest aquarium I have ever had in my room. My first and largest tank before was a 45 gallon and it was a wonderful heavily planted tank. Unfortunately, it’s broken now and has been decommissioned many years ago. Sadly, I also don’t have any photos or videos of that aquarium as I didn’t have a camera back then.

This new tank is still rather boring. I’m hoping to add tons of live plants whenever I have the opportunity. I need money to buy them but most of all they’re quite hard to get by here in Saudi Arabia. I wish I was back home in the Philippines where they are widely available and cheaper too – including fish. My hobby is obviously expensive in a desert country which is kinda sad.

I currently have two small angelfish, a school of eight black tetras, seven guppies and two mollies swimming in my tank. The livebearers (guppies and mollies) were borrowed from another smaller (16 gallon) tank in our living room. That tank has some goldfish at the moment.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the rather boring video of my new aquarium. I’m going to make my tank a lot prettier in the coming months and I’ll be posting updates along the way. 🙂

Happy Birthday to Me!

Happy Birthday to Me!

Aya-chan gave me a birthday cake… ehr, I mean… doughnut… to celebrate my birthday today. She’s so sweet! I don’t mind if it’s a cupcake, pancake or a simple loaf of bread with or without candles on top as long as it comes from her! ありがとうございます彩ちゃん!とてもとても愛してます!

Let me dream for now. It’s my birthday anyway! Hehehe!

Back to reality, I’d like to thank everyone who greeted me on my 2nd 25th birthday – yes, I’m in denial about being 26 but let it pass for now as well. Whether it was personally, through a phone call, via SMS, through email, on Facebook or telepathically I thank you all!

I may be broke at the moment but Keira Knightley and Yui Yoshioka are probably celebrating my birthday for me right now. If you are around their area just drop by their place and say that I invited you. Okay, don’t do it. I don’t want you to get in trouble because of me. Hahaha!

See yah!
